CAGE Code
A five-character alphanumeric identifier assigned to entities doing business with the federal government, used across solicitations and logistics systems.
Overview
The Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code is a five-character identifier assigned by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to companies, government agencies, and other organizations. CAGE codes are used throughout defense logistics, procurement, and supply chain systems to uniquely identify entities involved in government contracting activities worldwide.
Why It Matters in GovCon
A CAGE code is required for registration in the System for Award Management (SAM.gov) and is referenced on contracts, solicitations, invoices, and shipping documents. Without a valid CAGE code, a company cannot receive federal contract awards. It is also used in FPDS, WAWF, and other government systems to track contractor activity.
Key Details
- Assignment: U.S. entities receive a CAGE code automatically when registering in SAM.gov. International entities receive NATO CAGE (NCAGE) codes.
- Format: Five characters — U.S. codes use numbers and letters (excluding I and O); international NCAGE codes follow a different pattern.
- Managed By: The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) maintains the CAGE code database.
- Uses: Referenced in contracts, DD Form 250s, shipping labels, technical data packages, and logistics systems.
- Updates: CAGE code information must be kept current in SAM.gov; expired registrations can prevent contract awards and payments.
