National Stock Number(NSN)

A 13-digit numeric code used by the federal government to identify and catalog supplies and materials in a standardized way.

Overview

A National Stock Number (NSN) is a 13-digit identifier assigned to each item in the federal supply system. It enables consistent identification of parts, supplies, and equipment across the military and civilian agencies. The NSN is used for cataloging, procurement, inventory management, and logistics.

Why It Matters in GovCon

Many government solicitations — especially for supplies, spare parts, and MRO — reference NSNs. Contractors must be able to match their products to the correct NSN or obtain an NSN for new items. NSN assignment is managed through the Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS).
